A LITTLE ABOUT PELÚ THEATRE
Pelú aims to create socially-committed, Latino-rooted work in a space allowing for the exploration of story telling through the physical nature of our métier.
Valuing a space for artistic collaboration keen to the fusion of all arts that make up theatre, Pelú is a live, communal experience that only a live show could provide.
Featured Work:
(In progress) Solo Show
In Pícaro, we have focused primarily on exploring the dichotomy and incongruity that is the migration route, where people of the same background see and treat each other as the “Other.”
OTHER WORKS
A Suicide Note from a Cockroach
This debut production of Pelú Theatre presents a circus theatre spectacle exploring the themes of exile and the birth of a new subculture in America, putting a comic twist to the existential dilemma of being an immigrant in the U.S. The show is based on the poem A Suicide Note from a Cockroach in a low-income housing project written by Nuyorican poet Pedro Pietri.
Charivari!
This production of Pelú Theatre presents a circus theatre spectacle that relives the life-changing journey of immigration, an odyssey for the American Dream. But of course, with a comic twist to this existential dilemma of having to leave everything for the chance of a better life. The show is based on real-life stories from those who came through the water and who followed the desert route.
Lazarillo
Sold to a blind beggar as a child and passed from one master to another - each more cruel than the previous - young Lazarillo must pilfer and deceive to survive, and is usually punished for his pains. Based on the first picaresque novel once banned by the Inquisition, this modern interpretation set in the 1980s Bronx o integrates hip-hop, circus and comedia dell'arte traditions.
